Saint Barthélemy, more commonly known as St Barts is a popular destination for a Caribbean getaway. As most of the island’s terrain is hilly, it isn’t recommended for tourists to explore the whole island on foot. The locals prefer to go to places using cars, four-wheel drives, motorcycles or even scooters, as there is no public transport in St Barts. You can hire a cab to travel around, of course, but most cab drivers will only agree to show you around for a short time only.
Therefore, only one option remain; renting a car. If you stay on one of the island’s luxury resorts, they will arrange driver and car rental for you. A few villas even offer a free car rental service with their villa fees. However, most villas don’t offer this facility, and visitors are left to look for a car rental in St Barts on their own. Here are a few rental car companies in St Barts. Most are international companies that opened a branch on the island, with some local businesses making it to the list.

Tips on renting a car in St Barts
Here are some things you should know before renting a car in St Barts.
1. Car Rental Insurance
As there are many roads in St Barts that are narrow and have wild, spiky plantations on its sides, small superficial scratches cannot be avoided. Additionally, if you visit places with valet parking services, they could park your car a little too close to the wall, and leave a few scuff marks on the car doors. Rather than pay a few hundred dollars out of pocket for repair, you should invest in Collision Damage Insurance for your rental car, for your peace of mind. Insurance isn’t typically included in the rental price.
2. Choosing a car
Although most car rentals in St Barts offer quite a variety of vehicles, you should choose the smallest car that could fit the number of people in your travel group. Most of the roads on the islands are quite rough and a little narrower than back home. So, a bulky car is best avoided. If you plan to visit St Barts in summer, it is best not to rent a car without a roof or one with a retractable roof. The sun can be very intense during these months and you don’t want to end up with a sunburn before heading to the beach.
3. Fuel
There are two gas stations in St Barts; one in St Jean, across the street from the airport, and one in Lorient. The St Jean station is open six days a week, between 8:00 am to 12:00 pm and 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The Lorient station opens on Monday – Wednesday, and also Friday, between 7:30 am to 5 pm. On Thursdays and Fridays, the opening hours are shorter; between 7:30 am to 12:30 pm. Both stations close on Sundays. If you find yourself low on fuel on Sunday, or at closing hours, don’t worry; there is an automatic fuel pump at the St Jean station that uses credit cards. However, only European chip-and-pin cards work on it.
4. Electric cars
With more car rentals in St Barts offering more environmentally-friendly electric cars, hotels begin to set up charging stations to accommodate this change. Hotels that offer car-charging stations are:
- Le Manapany (Anse des Cayes)
- Le Christopher (Gustavia)
- Villa Lodge 4 épices (Grand Cul de Sac)
- Villa Marie (Colombier)
- Le Barthélémy (Baie de Grand Cul de Sac)
- Le Petit Morne (Colombier)
5. Driving around St Barts
As St Barts is an overseas territory of France, the island uses French traffic laws. The cars being rented have the driver’s side on the left, and people drive on the right side of the road. It is important that tourists are aware of this, especially if they come from countries where they don’t use this system (like the UK and Australia, for example), to avoid confusion. Tourists might also find the road conditions unlike what they’re used to at home. So, it is advised that you should drive slowly and carefully, and be especially mindful towards scooter riders, as there are many of them on the island. The views along the way to the destination is also another reason to drive at a leisurely speed.
